What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is a drugless health care method of relieving pain and restoring health. Rather than just treating the symptoms that are bothering you, we focus on uncovering and resolving the cause of your health issues and pain.

Chiropractic care recognizes that your nervous system is the true core of your body’s health and well-being. Just as electrical energy travels over wires to your home, your life energy uses your nervous system to send information to all parts of your body, to ensure all your organs, muscles and tissues are functioning as they should.

Needless to say, if your nervous system is injured or blocked in any way (subluxated), less life energy can travel to your organs and body systems. The result, over time, is a loss of function which can result in pain, illness and eventually, even death.

What is Subluxation?

A subluxation is a spinal or peripheral joint that is not moving in its normal motion pattern, often referred to as “locked up” or “pinched”. When this occurs, an imbalance is created in the spine or joint that causes imbalances, as well as irritation of the nerves and blood vessels affecting the way our bodies and brain communicate with each other. This will lead to pain, dysfunction and damage to our organs, muscles and tissues. Often times, pain will indicate that a subluxation is present, however sometimes subluxations can be non-symptomatic until they eventually show up as related weakness and changes in normal function which can result in eventual breakdown and injury.

What causes Subluxation?

Each person has a unique physical and chemical makeup, as well as an individual health and trauma history.  Subluxations are often correlated to the cumulative effects of all the things that have happened to you.  Specifically injuries, accidents, improper body mechanics in lifting, as well as repetitive tasks (like working on the computer, nursing a newborn, etc.) are all common causes of subluxations.  Other causes include but are not limited to poor sleeping habits, poor posture, inherited spinal weaknesses, obesity, stress, not enough rest or sleep, and a sedentary lifestyle.

How do you correct Subluxation?

Chiropractors correct subluxations with a technique call a spinal adjustment.  This procedure involves a precise, short thrust to return the vertebrae or spinal bones to their proper position and motion.  This allows the related nerves and tissue to function the way they were designed so the body can heal optimally.  Chiropractic adjustments are preformed with the doctor’s hands or other tools.  Your chiropractor will determine the most appropriate treatment for your specific problem after examining you.

Does the adjustment hurt?

Most chiropractic adjustments are not painful; in fact often times patients report they feel good and are very relieving.  If you have been involved in a recent injury or trauma, adjustments can cause some irritation to the inflamed tissues.  This type of discomfort can be reduced or avoided with the use of ice after your adjustment.  Some people experience odd sensations in their muscles or extremities after their treatment.  This is a normal reaction to the relieving of pressure from a nerve and thought by some scientists to be a result of increased circulation once the irritation of the nerve is removed.

What should I expect?

New Leaf Chiropractic care works to correct any subluxations that are interfering with your spinal nerve function.  To do that, we first conduct a comprehensive health analysis.  Of course we’ll want to know all about the symptoms that brought you to our office, but that’s not all.  We’ll also ask about your lifestyle, nutrition, biomechanics, exercise habits, medication use and other factors that can affect your wellbeing.  That’s all part of helping you achieve true health – not just relieving symptoms.

That’s why ourdoctors spend your first visit getting to know you and your specific health concerns. Your first visit may include X-rays and other important tests so that we can determine the specifics of your situation. I'm confused as to which will help me more -
chiropractic care of physical therapy?

Physiotherapy is a wonderful way to strengthen your body’s musculature and improve your overall well-being. That’s why our clinic includes a full range of physiotherapy services. In fact, most patients benefit greatly from flexibility training, strengthening and exercises designed to correct any postural and/or muscular imbalances. We seek to help you, but also teach you ways to help yourself for greater long term benefit.

But our experience shows that physiotherapy by itself is not enough. Why? Because physiotherapy does not address the underlying reason for your health concern – subluxation. Choosing physiotherapy alone is like living with a rock in your shoe. You can do a series of exercises to strengthen your foot so that the rock doesn’t bother you so much. You can rub and massage the foot to feel better. But wouldn’t it be easier – and more effective – to get rid of the rock in the first place? That’s what chiropractic care can do for you.

Do I have to a patient forever?

Absolutely not. Our intention is to improve the quality of your life – not take it over! Having said that, it’s important to understand how chiropractic care differs from traditional medical care. Let’s think about this in terms of health. How do you define health? Most people would say that health is feeling good – that is, not experiencing any obvious pain that interferes with their life.

But is that really all “health” is? If so, how do we explain the sudden deaths of people who were “feeling so good” the day before? The fact is, you can feel quite healthy yet be unaware of the cancer growing in your body or the heart disease that is attacking your arteries every day.

Actually, health refers to wholeness – all parts of the body are functioning properly and in harmony with each other. When one part stops functioning effectively, you might experience pain. But then again, you might not. So judging our health by whether we feel “good” or “pain” is not the best way to care for ourselves. That’s why chiropractic care can involve multiple treatments. We are not merely treating your pain or symptoms. We are treating your entire body as one health system, ensuring that all parts are working in harmony and correcting those that are not.
